Ferulic CE Elixir, Explained: The Science Behind Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid
Vitamin C is one of the most researched ingredients in skincare — but on its own, it's also one of the least stable. It breaks down with exposure to light and air, which is part of why so many vitamin C products are sold in dark, airtight packaging. Pairing it with ferulic acid is a common way formulators work around that.
Why Vitamin C Alone Isn't Always Stable
Pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) oxidizes relatively quickly once a bottle is opened, which can reduce how effective it is by the time you're actually using it. That instability is one of the main formulation challenges with vitamin C serums generally.
Where Ferulic Acid Comes In
Ferulic acid is itself an antioxidant, and research has found it can help stabilize vitamin C when the two are combined — plus vitamin E, in some formulations. In a frequently cited study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (Lin et al., 2005), researchers found that combining vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid provided meaningfully better protection against UV-induced skin damage than using vitamin C on its own. That's ingredient-level research on the combination itself, not a claim about any single finished product — but it's a big part of why "vitamin C + ferulic acid" shows up together so often.
How It Fits Into a Routine
Antioxidant serums like this are generally a morning step — applied after cleansing, before sunscreen — since their job is partly to help defend skin against the free-radical damage that builds up over a day of UV and environmental exposure.
