Switch Up Your Skincare Routine This Fall
With fall comes cold, crisp air, and indoor heating – both of which can be bad for your skin. Here are skincare changes to make this season for skin that is clear and comfortable.
The leaves are turning warm shades of red, orange, and brown and the smell of pumpkin spice latte is in the air. After an unusually hot summer, fall is finally here and the countdown to the long-awaited holiday season has officially begun. And with the change in season comes a drop in temperature, which is great for relaxing in front of the fire, but not as great when it comes to the health of your skin.
The Weather and Your Skin
When the weather becomes cooler, humidity levels drop, making the air drier. This makes it more difficult for your skin to retain moisture, which can cause it to become cracked and uncomfortable.
And it’s not just the cold outdoors that can affect your complexion but the warm indoors, too! The dry air generated by heaters and central heating systems can also irritate your epidermis.
Fortunately, your skin doesn’t need to suffer this season. All it takes is a few changes to your skincare routine and environment to ensure your skin is hydrated and happy this fall.
1. Switch to creamy cleansers
Certain formulas work best at different times and for different skin types. Those with oily skin may benefit from a gel or foam cleanser. But in fall, a creamy or oil-based formula will add moisture rather than strip it away while still leaving you feeling fresh.
2. Add extra hydration
It’s not necessary to add a lot of extra products to your fall skincare routine to get optimal results. Look for certain ingredients, such as moisture molecule hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin, which can all help to keep skin plump and supple.
3. Swap light lotions for rich moisturizers
In summer, a light lotion is often all that’s needed to keep skin moisturized. But to protect your complexion when the weather cools down, switch them out for a thicker, richer formula to your skin protected and prevent transepidermal water loss.
4. Look after your lips
Our lips don’t have oil glands. As such, they dry out more quickly than other areas, which can leave them raw and chapped. Instead of licking them (which can make it worse), apply a thick lip balm regularly and liberally to keep them comfortable.
5. Invest in a humidifier
A great way to combat the side effects of dry air, both on your skin and overall wellbeing, is to add moisture to it. Investing in a humidifier can help to retain moisture and prevent your skin from becoming dry and itchy.
